PF1000 Pathfinder Scanner Hot Metal Detector

Reliable Hot Metal Detection

The PF1000 Pathfinder Scanner Hot Metal Detectors use the latest microprocessor technology to sense the hot product via a multiplexed I0 Germanium Diode Array. It out performs all other Scanner HMDs as operates via a floating control margin that automatically evaluates and compensates for IR signal changes from the background metalwork or heavy steam in its field of view. The Pathfinder is not a simple threshold device, but an intelligent sensor.

Available with a range of scanning angle options, the PF1000 Pathfinder responds to hot product passing at high velocities with highly repeatable accuracy regardless of changes in its temperature or that of background metalwork (for instance, Hot Scale) as well as where heavy steam interrupts its field of view. For difficult areas in the mill such as on cooling beds or exit from furnaces and cooling boxes it is the ideal choice.

Furthermore, with its built-in self test and continuous self checking, the PF1000 Pathfinder is a highly reliable alternative to Rotary Scanner HMDs.

There are three Pathfinder models. The PF1015 with a 1° x 15° Scanning Angle, the PF1022 with a 2° x 22° Scanning Angle and the PF1033 with a 3° x 33 Scanning Angle. There is also a Remote Controller Pathfinder (PF2000) which utilises a range of Remote Lenses for mounting away from the line via selective bundle Optic Lead.

As the Pathfinder operates by comparing the hot product and the background signals neither hot scale, or steam within the scanners field of view will cause false triggering. Also, its trip level will not be raised due to any lens contamination. Furthermore, the PF1000’s use of an Germanium Diode Array ensures fast and accurate detection of both the leading and trailing edges of the product, even when there is a wide range of varying IR signals present, such as found on cooling beds. Regular analogue HMDs with their single diodes or motorised Rotary Scanners struggle to match its speed or accuracy in these difficult areas.

Ideally suited for detection of Rod or Strip, the leading and trailing edge response times are digitally adjusted via locking timers that can be adjusted from 1ms to 250ms. Uniquely, the Pathfinder to assist in alignment the product path is replicated by a 10 bar LED Display that is also used for indication of control margin and response times via two covered external push switches.

The Pathfinder operates from either 80 - 240VAC or 24VDC via an IP66 watertight plug/socket. Various outputs are provided from the Pathfinder; a 500mA N/O Reed Relay with a 4ms response time, opto-isolated 50V / 30mA outputs with a response time of 2ms and both NPN & PNP Transistor outputs rated at 400mA. The housing is constructed from cast AL6 aluminium with watertight rating of IP66/DIN 89011 and is finished in an oven-baked blue paint. Air cooling is supplied via air passing through a large side cooling chamber that vents as air purge past air deflector in the front of the lens that allows the use of non-instrument air.

Improved air cooling can be provided by using an in-line vortex tube air cooler. Alternatively, an optional water coolant chamber radiator with separate air purging is available, where a copper coolant radiator is mounted internally to provide further cooling.
