Flexible Hot Metal Detector (HMD)

The MD95100 is a fully digital “All-in-One” Remote Hot Metal Detector (HMD) that uses a highly stable InGaAs Photodiode for detection hot product in Rod, Bar, Plate, Tube and Hot Strip Mills where high ambient temperatures and heavy water and steam are present.

An LED bar display indicates the percentage of infra-red signal emitted by the product and background relative to a user adjusted trip level.

Operating from 80-240VAC or 24VDC supply. Standard outputs include a cradle relay, a fast-reed relay and both NPN/PNP transistor outputs. The HMD is programmable via two covered external switches. These allow for simple setting of both the threshold settings and response times to between 1ms and 250ms to allow for black spots on the bar, yet provide highly accurate and fast detection of the product.

Hot Metal Detector Remote Lenses

The MD95100 Remote Digital Controller can be mounted away from the line in its protective cradle and due to the use of high ambient spec. armoured flexible stainless Optic Leads and a range of remote Lens options, these can be mounted close to the line in the high ambient in heavy steam or water. Can be used throughout the mill, thereby allowing the MD95100 to replace a range of HMDs with the lenses can be mounted on the actual roller table or stands.

Depending upon the selected lens, ambient temperatures of up to 200°C or 400°C or even 1,000°C are accommodated, The robust optic leads withstand 400°C ambient temperatures and are available in various lengths of up to 15m. This allows the lenses to be mounted close to the line for higher accuracy of detection, yet the controller can be mounted in a safe accessible location.

The choice of lens is dictated by the detection requirement. For general tracking, spot lenses are the usual choice where high accuracy is needed or the product moves about a centre-line (for instance a Rod Mill) then a ½° x 25° precision slit rectangular lens would be the option to use. If detection is required inside the mill stand or below the line, then the Shrouded Quartz Rod Lens rated to 1000°C ensures that detection is possible in even the heaviest steam or water contamination being present.

The MD95100 has a remote self-check facility that operates via an internal Infra-Red LED that when operated, switches the detector thus confirming whether its outputs are operating correctly. Furthermore, alignment is easily verified using a small lamp or torch, where a high gain LED indicates operation independent to the detectors output.
